It is the 8th time or 9th time we have been to Mini-Mundus – now Bellevue Rendez-vous – since we discovered this lovely restaurant about two years ago. I think it is good they changed their name because now it sounds more French, and gives a better indication of what is inside. I walked in front of it for years without noticing it and I believe it was because of the somewhat anonymous “Mini-Mundus” name. One day in the late afternoon, after walking at Wandsworth Common, we passed by and were looking at the menu posted outside when some fellow passers-by told us it was a restaurant to try and that the food was excellent. The restaurant was closed at the time because the previous day they had a party night but the door was open so we went in. Pablo (the chef) was cleaning the place, yet he was extremely nice to us and we were happy to discover a real French restaurant in this area. I had not previously been confident that it was really French. When I asked if he had foie gras in his menu, he even offered us some to take home so we could taste it! That was our first encounter with Mini-Mundus. It could not have been better!

The design of the restaurant has changed, for the third time I think, since I’ve known it and it keeps improving the place even if I liked the way it was before. We have been happy with Mini-Mundus every time we went there so they are very reliable.

Today we had as first courses a blue cheese salad with apple and walnuts (£5.50) and a rabbit and pork terrine (£6.50). As main courses we ordered a confit of duck (£14) and a rack of lamb (£17). The wine was a 2005 Bergerac Château Ponchapt (£15). As dessert we had a chocolate fondant (£6.50) and a gâteau de Pablo (£5).

The terrine was very good – nice and rustic/chunky.  Happily, it was not overloaded with salt – as is often the case with commercial patés and terrines – though salt and pepper was provided for those who like to garnish their food. It was served with excellent fresh-baked sliced baguette and cornichons on the side, which provided a nice contrast to the terrine. The blue cheese salad was great, with the apples and walnuts contrasting nicely from the cheese.

Stéphanie and her excellent staff were as friendly and attentive as always, and our meals arrived piping hot as they should.  The confit, sadly, was overcooked and a bit tough. It isn’t an easy dish to mess, so that was a bit of a disappointment.  I have had the confit at this restaurant several times previously, and it was good every other time – so I won’t hold it against them.  The green beans and sautées potatoes were good as always (though perhaps a little less plentiful than in the past – I hope its not a trend!).  The lamb was excellent! It was perfectly cooked, a little burnt and crispy outside but tender in the middle (see photos below) and the mash and endive fitted in well.

Cost and conclusion: the bill was £69.50 and there is no “discretionary” service charge included in the bill as many restaurants rudely do so a big bravo to them to keep it that way! By the way, they say at the bottom of the menu a 12.5% service charge is added to rude people so be friendly and you will be safe 😉  I think Bellevue Rendez-vous/Mini-Mundus offers a very good value for money considering what you are getting. The food is excellent, the location next to the park is great, the service is friendly and efficient. What else to ask? Well, I would like fry panned foie gras for example but I am being difficult! We will be back for sure!

The County Arms in Wandsworth

The County Arms pub is located on the busy Trinity Road at the corner of Alma Terrace. It is facing the sports area of Wandsworth Common. It is a pretty large building and the setting inside is quite spacious and nicely furnished with large tables. We chose a table in the conservatory, to the rear of the building. It was not busy at all, but it was a Thursday lunchtime and I can imagine the place well crowded on Friday evening or during the weekend with all the families going to the park next door.

As starters we ordered potted chicken liver pate with toasted bread (£5.50) and toasted goat’s cheese on a beetroot and potato salad (£5.25). The goat cheese was quite good, generously sized. It was on top of a potato salad which had a good amount of onions which complemented the goat cheese nicely. The potato salad was chilled, it would have been better at room temperature. The goat cheese was hot of course. The beetroot salad has a spicy mustard sauce. The chicken liver was great, smooth and not overpowering. I just wished to have a little more bread, which was excellent too by the way.

For main courses we had a lamb shank with roasted potatoes and green beans (£9.95) which was their BBQ special for the day and a cumberland sausage with creamy mash and caramelised onion gravy (£8.50). The red wine was a good Le Sanglier Carignan 2007 (£15.45) which went well with the meals we had. The lamb shank was good, it could have been seasoned a little more but that’s not a major complaint. The gravy was not obviously from a packet unlike in many pubs… The potatoes were not fantastic, they were probably pre-roasted and then nuked. They were hot but not crispy. The sausages were fine and the creamy mash good too. It is not a top meal naturally but it was exactly what I expected and wanted in a pub. I was very hungry as you can tell.

For desserts we took the fruit crumble with custard (£4.95) and a bread and butter pudding (£4.95). The fruit crumble was based on plums and was good, not too sweet and a little sour. It was very hot. The bread and butter pudding could have been better. It was fine but was the same as you could get in a hundred other places. Maybe too much eggs and not enough bread and butter.

Cost and conclusion: with two 3 courses meals and a bottle of wine for £60 (including the service charge) the County Arms is reasonably well priced. The surrounding is nice and the service was efficient. We will be back!

Pizza Express at Wandsworth Common

Located on Trinity Road just next to Wandsworth Common, this Pizza Express has open spaces to the front and the rear of the restaurant which is nice during summer. The restaurant is full of kids during the weekend so do not go there if you are looking for a quiet peaceful lunch. It was even full of kids today!
We ordered two pizzas (on Romana base meaning it is thinner, making the pizza bigger and crispier) and two Peroni beer. The beer were served quickly and were cold.

The two pizzas were the pizza La Reine (prosciutto cotto ham, olives and mushrooms for £7.55) and the pizza Soho (an olive and garlic pizza with fresh rocket and shaved grana padano added once it is out of the oven for £7.55 also). The pizza La Reine was average, a bit too much tomato sauce which made the pizza go a bit soggy, and a bit stingy on the cheese and ham. No complaint with the olives, that was the right amount. The pizza Soho was good and light compared to the pizza La Reine. Its base was crispy and the fresh rocket was giving a good flavour to the pizza. The chilli oil was very mild but still nice.

Cost and conclusion:  For £23.80 (plus service to add) it was fine for me who took the pizza Soho. I tried a little the pizza La Reine and I thought there was way too much tomato sauce making it bad. So overall it depends on the pizza you choose. There are usually vouchers with Pizza Express (do a search online) where you can take two pizzas for the price of one or get starters for free etc. With them the value for money would be good but I didn’t use them and for about the same the price you can eat much better at Rustica in Richmond, which isn’t located next door I agree. Still, if you have a big family, it is a good place to take your kids there. They even have baby changing facilities.
